Overcoming the Ultimate Loss: How to Stay Motivated When You Lose a Parent l Manuel Brito

Show notes

Today, I’m joined by Manuel Brito — a teacher, a father, and someone whose perspective on life was profoundly shaped through personal loss.

After losing his mother, Manuel was forced to confront grief in a deeply personal way. But rather than allowing tragedy to distance him from life, it inspired him to become even more present, intentional, and connected — both in his own journey and in the lives of his children.

As an educator, Manuel brings empathy, patience, and humanity into everything he does. As a father, he’s committed to showing up fully for every moment — embracing the small conversations, the everyday experiences, and the importance of truly being there for the people he loves most.

Today, we’ll talk about resilience, family, presence, and how life’s hardest moments can reshape the way we love, lead, and live.

00:00:53: Okay good thats definitely very good statement from my part because You are taking a technical course.

00:01:05: Yes, so

00:01:05: you're starting to learn technical skills But do have other skills which are also essential for today's labor market such as communication skills, interpersonal skills language skill

00:01:18: absolutely

00:01:20: Things to do with computer skills all of these skills already important.

00:01:24: So we should learn your technical skills but also this so-called soft skill Which the market and professionals demand more and more?

00:01:34: Absolutely, I totally agree with you.

00:01:36: And let me say that's why i started to learn a new language... ...and thank-you for being good teacher!

00:01:48: I was diving some particular statements in it.. ..I believe most people be foxes and terminated is hard because there are those days that you feel lazy and the... You don't feel like doing anything.

00:02:07: And my question is, how do you face these things?

00:02:10: Do I have to face this moment when it feels as if you want something or just stay in your house watching TV Whatever!

00:02:25: It's something i'm afraid of.

00:02:30: How do you face it these days?

00:02:32: Or how would you stay however, or get over this moment.

00:02:37: We all have good days and bad day.

00:02:40: sometimes a bad day is not that bad.

00:02:43: I mean sometime we just had to stop.

00:02:44: yeah relax for awhile so You don't have to be constantly doing some

00:02:48: here with

00:02:49: Just doing nothing.

00:02:50: That's also very hell.

00:02:52: if those moments become more and More normal i mean there's something not right With your life your eyes are getting depraved or you're getting tired, worn out somehow.

00:03:06: How do you overcome this?

00:03:07: Well there are many things which are very important.

00:03:10: for example if you have a good support from family and friends If you always practice sports in my case sport is very important I feel more tired when i don't do sport than when i do So.

00:03:26: you have to find ways of overcoming that kind of laziness.

00:03:31: But if don't want do anything, but you know You cannot just be sitting around every day.

00:03:38: Be strong get out your comfort zone Do something different because it helps

00:03:44: Absolutely.

00:03:49: When I invite you think like this guy is some guy.

00:03:55: that inspired me a lot.

00:03:57: And in some of our classes, you teach us a lotta things... I mean such great topics and always even when we were angry with each other it was... I don't know how to say this word but it's amazing!

00:04:18: It was amazing and i believe our experience builds on personality And make us better and better.

00:04:26: What is something that happened in your past?

00:04:28: A feeling, experience or emotion... That you think shaped who I wanted to be?

00:04:37: Yes

00:04:39: Okay well i have to definitely say this.

00:04:41: my mother This was my lighthouse Because she had a very difficult life.

00:04:46: My father died when I was very young So She brought me up

00:04:50: alone.

00:04:51: So she is definitely my example.

00:04:54: She was a fantastic person, so... My life would not have been the same without... That's probably my example.

00:05:04: I love it!

00:05:04: How do you hear that?

00:05:07: First of all You are great trainer and i'm glad to have you as my trainer.

00:05:11: Thankyou You're welcome.

00:05:14: Well did you always dream about being a trainer or Is this something you find along your way?

00:05:21: Well, actually when I was in college and faculty.

00:05:26: Uh...I had two different possibilities either i would become a teacher or I will became a translator.

00:05:33: Yeah yeah?

00:05:34: I chose translation.

00:05:37: my specialty is in translation Absolutely.

00:05:39: When I came here Sikotin..i was translate Alright.

00:05:43: But then this school.

00:05:45: so they invited me to teach.

00:05:47: And the truth is that I love teaching transmitting knowledge to other people.

00:05:52: And I love communicating and teaching.

00:05:55: you need to communicate every day, in every moment.

00:05:58: Exactly!

00:05:59: So no it was not something that when i never said...I'm going to be

00:06:05: a teacher

00:06:06: but ever since i started..i've never stopped ..and i loved doing

00:06:11: it.

00:06:11: Absolutely well i'm sure your faced many struggle ...you were saying grow you and you are inspired by her, absolutely.

00:06:24: And during this process what do you believe gave you the strength to get through them?

00:06:32: Yeah as I said my mom... As i was growing up we were bored because my mother had take care of herself in me.

00:06:41: she had to work.

00:06:43: just it's only two us.

00:06:45: And so I guess, when i was going through school and then in university.

00:06:50: When I started working... ...I always looked back and said look!

00:06:54: I have to do it for her because she deserves it.

00:06:58: Yes

00:06:58: She worked very hard to give me my school and get me to work.

00:07:03: So now its my turn to support them.

00:07:06: That's probably again the example where I followed Her example.. ..and I knew that she had helped me.

00:07:15: Just some pictures.

00:07:17: And the same for my family when I got married and so

00:07:20: on?

00:07:21: It's a little hard to hear that, but... ...I'm feeling in similar conditions because my mother also gave me the strength even though it was down or even when they thought- I didn't get this scholarship to travel to Portugal.

00:07:41: My father was seeking and my mother gave me all this kind of material that I needed.

00:07:51: My support, the emotional advice... And i'm so glad to have her like my mother.

00:08:01: When we talk about your mother in a similar condition absolutely!

00:08:07: It's very

00:08:08: important for us to understand them everywhere.

00:08:10: Yes

00:08:13: The human being is not made to exist alone.

00:08:17: We have networks.

00:08:19: Yes, absolutely.

00:08:20: I Have network of my colleagues here at work friends with family might My kids.

00:08:27: So it's very important to have these groups.

00:08:29: this net works

00:08:30: because

00:08:30: otherwise you will live Alone and he will always feel long.

00:08:34: yes And that's really a very very very bad.

00:08:37: She is absolutely yeah also in getting back Some some subject I love in somehow because you told has a little bit about your son And i'm sure there are some father watching this right now.

00:08:52: and In your opinion, what is the dark side all?

00:08:56: The light side of being a father?

00:08:58: Well that is no dark side.

00:09:00: I mean sometimes it's difficult.

00:09:02: Yeah Sure

00:09:03: Because It takes A lot Of time.

00:09:05: it Takes A Lot of Effort Takes A lot of Work She Has a lot of Expense Okay and so lots of Worrying By.

00:09:12: Wow I wouldn't say there's a dark side.

00:09:15: There is no dark sign in being a hub.

00:09:18: that are difficult moments, as you never...

00:09:20: Absolute lizard-like?

00:09:22: Yes!

00:09:22: But

00:09:22: it pretty much all lights.

00:09:24: because i mean You see from the moment he or she was born until He or She has grown up And

00:09:32: we

00:09:33: can see them through these stages.

00:09:36: It always different and wonderful.

00:09:38: Of course they're problem like every single life, there are difficult moments but I wouldn't say the dark side.

00:09:45: it's pretty much light.

00:09:47: really good.

00:09:49: wait let me listen to that those words... now i'm excited to be a father.

00:09:57: absolutely

00:09:58: and no you're

00:10:00: a father?

00:10:00: No!

00:10:00: I am excited.

00:10:05: Well we are getting too f***ed.

00:10:08: some final question, but before we cross in the bridge you will have a few questions left as I said.

00:10:14: The first one is what's the most interesting thing that you've learned recently?

00:10:21: That's good question!

00:10:23: Okay...I've recently started to learn Italian because i love languages amazing..i know a few languages and im always interested knowing more about them, knowing different ones.

00:10:37: So recently, I would say that's probably the most interesting part.

00:10:42: My most interesting thing is what i've learned.

00:10:45: How to learn Italian?

00:10:46: Right

00:10:48: and

00:10:50: if someone offered you a box containing everything you have lost why would you look first?

00:10:57: That's good question!

00:11:00: I remember once when my mother was a kid she offered me And I remembered that... ...I went with some friends to the beach and... ...sealingly, took a read.

00:11:17: And then lost it!

00:11:18: And this was very important for my mother.

00:11:21: so she wasn't sadder- She's more sad than me but i would like to recover that.

00:11:28: Other Than That... I don't think anything else.

00:11:33: I love that.

00:11:35: If you watch in these videos five years from now Which advice would you love to hear from yourself?

00:11:43: Okay, so what advice I will give now

00:11:48: and the here

00:11:49: five years from now.

00:11:50: Yes like when we are like I lost here that

00:11:55: okay.

00:11:55: What i would say is Always learn new thing because whatever it could be a New sports could be A new game Could be a video game my son for example could be a new language, to be in your class that I teach because you have this capacity of always learning from everything.

00:12:21: So why would tell myself is never stop learning and never stopped doing exercise or playing tennis my favorite sport?

00:12:30: Absolutely!

00:12:31: Because it's good for the body as well.

00:12:35: absolutely if you can create one law everybody has follow What

00:12:46: would it be?

00:13:03: will be okay.

00:13:14: Sherry Lovey is truly show of how human being can be like.

00:13:22: when you are in similar condition with someone and do think I can offer help for them, yeah just do it because if you want to someone helping you could help somebody else.

00:13:39: yes absolutely.

00:13:41: Can you share a piece of advice?

00:13:43: You wish, when you were younger something that you believed if I had heard it my whole life could have made an eye-opening difference.

00:13:58: Maybe If i told myself before That being a teacher would be so interesting maybe I will follow the different paths of translation

00:14:11: and

00:14:12: teaching Although today being a teacher is a bit difficult, I'm not sure.

00:14:21: But yeah that's it.

00:14:25: Amazing!

00:14:27: This our final station and i really appreciate your presence right here in every single question.
